Celebrating Impact: The 2023 GSTEP Awards Ceremony

The 2023 Ghana Science & Tech Explorer Prize (GSTEP) Exhibition and Awards Ceremony took place on Thursday, January 25, 2024, at the Accra International Conference Center. This prestigious event brought together finalists from the Greater Accra, Eastern, and Ashanti regions, showcasing their innovative prototypes and celebrating their remarkable achievements.

These prototypes spanned various fields, including science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

At 2pm, the main hall of the Conference Centre hosted the awards ceremony with the highlight of the event being the announcement of GET Group from John Wesley Methodist Basic School as the 2023 GSTEP Challenge Winner.

AquaSentry, from Services Primary JHS in the Greater Accra Region came 1st runner up and 2nd runner up was The Light Bearers from DA-Great Impact School Complex, Abaam, in the Eastern Region.

Distinguished personalities, educators, and supporters of the GSTEP program gathered to honour outstanding individuals and institutions.

Representing the President of the Republic of Ghana, the Chief of Staff Frema Opare delivered an inspiring speech, urging all young people in the hall to dream big and persevere.

Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, the Minister for Education also graced the ceremony and commended the schools and stakeholders for their significant contributions to the programme. He emphasized the role of education in shaping Ghana’s future and praised the efforts of the GSTEP Team in fostering innovative initiatives from the participating teams, aimed at addressing societal challenges. In attendance was the Director General for Education, Dr. Eric Nkansah, the Swiss Ambassador, Simone Giger and the Osu Mantse, Nortse Nii Nortey Owuo IV among many other dignitaries

Doreen Andoh, a renowned Ghanaian radio personality hosted the awards ceremony and seamlessly guided the flow of the event. Awards were also presented to individuals who performed exceptionally during the 2023 GSTEP programme. Awards were presented to the outstanding teacher, coach and mentors. Some selected finalists were also awarded for their exceptional performance during the programme and at the exhibition. This included awards for the Best Pitch, the People’s Choice Award, Excellence in Applied Science Award among many others.

The 2023 GSTEP Exhibition and Awards Ceremony brought together people from different walks of life to celebrate the efforts of the finalists but most importantly encouraged and supported the drive for the growth and development of STEM education in Ghana. The event showed the potential of Ghana’s youth to make a significant impact in their communities with the needed support and guidance.
