On Thursday, April 3, 2025, the DreamOval Foundation officially launched its new initiative, Women Educators in Internet and Technology (WEITech), at the Accra College of Education (AcCE) Auditorium in East Legon. The launch event brought together a mix of education leaders, technology experts, teacher trainees and the newly selected participants of the first WEITech cohort.

WEITech is a timely response to the growing digital gender divide and aims to enhance the employability and economic empowerment of unemployed female teachers in Ghana. Over the next two years, participants will receive training in digital literacy, online instructional design, content creation, and tools for navigating the digital economy. The program is designed to open up new opportunities such as creating online courses, remote employment, and participation in the wider EdTech space.

Held under the theme “The Internet: Equipping Educators, Enhancing Education,” the event featured keynote remarks from Prof. Samuel A. Atintono, Principal of Accra College of Education and National President of the Conference of Principals of Colleges of Education. He emphasized the importance of capacity building for female educators and the growing demand for tech-savvy teachers in Ghana’s education system.

In her welcome address, Afua Oforiwaa Asiamah-Adjei, Executive Director of the DreamOval Foundation, shared the mission behind WEITech. “Nearly half of all women globally still do not use the internet. This digital exclusion is not just a tech issue—it’s an education, economic, and gender equity issue. WEITech is our commitment to bridging that gap and changing that narrative here in Ghana,” she said.

A key highlight of the event was a panel discussion that brought together experts from the fields of education and technology. Panelists included:

  • Kwame Nyatuame, President of the Ghana EdTech Alliance
  • Stephen Adomako, Venture Acceleration Specialist at ALX
  • Dr Bernice Oteng, Head of the Social Science Department at AcCE
  • Priscilla Amoakoa, WEITech Cohort 1 participant

Moderated by social media influencer and educator Teacher Blessing, the conversation explored how educators can leverage technology to improve teaching outcomes, the realities of digital transformation in Ghana’s public education system, and how to support women-led innovations in EdTech. The panel served as both inspiration and a knowledge-sharing platform for the cohort and guests.

The event also marked the formal introduction of the first WEITech cohort. They also received an orientation on the program structure and expectations as they prepare to begin the first module of their training journey.

Supported by the Internet Society Foundation, WEITech represents a collaborative effort to ensure that no woman educator is left behind in the digital age. As the program unfolds, it promises to equip a new generation of female educators with the tools and confidence to thrive and lead in Ghana’s evolving edtech landscape.
